about

At end of 1981 as the band the Buckthrusters was falling apart, Jim Skeel left Wichita and headed for Kansas City. His plan was to Join Frank Womack, drummer from the Yard Apes, to start something new. After one false start in the formation of A Peep Show In Reverse with Cinna Turnbull on bass, Frank and Jim joined forces with the Rew brothers and Jerry Slepekis. The new band was eventually dubbed John Doe.

Before John Doe was even out of the basement Frank returned to the Yard Apes and Jon Paul ably replaced him on drums. By mid 1982 John Doe was gigging heavily in the KC / Lawrence, Kansas area. The band started to record their songs on Jim's 4 track recorder but Jim found an 8 track tape machine for rent and upgraded for their recording. These tracks were recorded in late November,1982 but were not yet mixed down. On New Years Eve John Doe played one last gig before Jim and Jon announced they were moving on to start the band Short-term Memory with Kevin Dooley.

The tapes lay forgotten until in the late 1980's when Jim made one of his many moves to a new living arrangement. He was able to rent the same tape machine to do a quick mix of the songs but again they lay waiting. In 2019 Jim took another listen and decided to master the songs and put them up on Bandcamp for your listening pleasure. Here then are the songs of John Doe (the band) when they were hot.
